from the homefront

Being home has made me realize how different my two world are! It was so nice to come back to street signs and house numbers when trying to find someone's house for the first time the other day. In Albania, directions involve finding the nearest known landmark, then going close to it and making a ring on the cell phone (just a ring since it's so expensive to use your cell phone) and then the person comes to meet you and show you how to get there. Then you're expected to find it on your own the next time! I've also enjoyed little things, like being able to flush the toilet paper and being able to say the word "car" without looking who's around. In Albania, "car" is a really bad word, so even when speaking in English, we usually still use the Albanian word "makina" instead. I've enjoyed driving so much! I've only driven about six times in the last two years I've spent in Albania, and it's so nice to get in the car, roll the windows down, crank the radio and just drive with the wind blowing through my hair! Two words--air conditioning! I've really enjoyed the green color here. There is very little grass and greenery in Albania, and since Ohio has had two weeks of rain, it's so green here and the trees and grass look beautiful. There are things I miss about Albania, but I'm just really enjoying being home!

Amen Sista!!!! Me too!!! Did you get Marianne's E-mail letting you know that I came home early because my brother-in-law died. I'm at my sisters near Kirby Arkansas.

I too am enjoying many of the same things you wrote about. It is so forrested and green here in Arkansas that I have chills down my spine when I drive down the road.

I went to Wal-Mart my second day here to pick up some things before heading to my sisters. I'm sure people in the store might have thought I was a bit crazy, or even tipsy or something. I was walking through the store saying in rythem to my self, "I'm shoppin at Wal-Mart...I'm shoppin at Wal-Mart"!!!

And, it is quite quite easy to find myself speeding as I drive through the hills of Arkansas because driving is so unincumbered here!!! You can just fly. I do not want a ticket so I reign myself in and slow. But, it sure does feel good to hit the gas of my Mama's Camrey as I zip on down the road without manichical Albanian drivers flying at me from all directions!!!

The other day Judy and I went to the hospital to visit a little boy who'd just had an apendix removed. While there we went to the hospital caffeteria. I had a hard time not just scooping up everything in sight. And, I just plain had a hard time deciding what to get. They served Starbucks Coffee, and Columbo Frozen Yogurt, and all sorts of yummy things. I had to keep reminding myself that I didn't have to pile everything on my tray at once, that we will be here in America for six to eight months and I have time to have some of all the things I've missed!
